THE SMINORGS COMMUNITY CAN HELP
Social Media in Organizations (SMinOrgs) is a professional community founded by Courtney Hunt in 2009 and sponsored by Renaissance Strategic Solutions (RSS).
SMinOrgs' mission is to provide information and guidance about the organizational implications of social media. Going beyond marketing/branding, sales, public relations and customer service, it focuses on how social media will impact employees and organizational functioning, as well as general social and economic trends. Its focus also extends beyond the business-to-consumer orientation that dominates discussions in other forums.
A multi-disciplinary group, SMinOrgs functions as a global, virtual community complemented by a local/regional focus. Membership in SMinOrgs is currently free, and people can join on a variety of platforms.
The SMinOrgs website features the SMinOrgs S.M.A.R.T. Blog, an educational blog about the implications and applications of social media in organizations. Focusing on both opportunities and challenges, it is targeted to organizational leaders and others who are in the early stages of climbing their social media learning curves. The blog includes traditional thought pieces, as well as new additions to the Social Media Primer (see details below), SMinOrgs S.M.A.R.T. News Digests, excerpts of SMinOrgs white papers and research reports, and other S.M.A.R.T. Resources.

WHY SOCIAL MEDIA IN ORGANIZATIONS?
Changing technology in digital communication in general, and social media in particular, has tremendous implications for organizations and how they function - not just externally (with clients, customers, and other stakeholders), but internally as well. The impact of digital social media cannot be overestimated - even if you don't believe a revolution is underway, the technological advances currently taking place will have a significant impact on how organizations function in the (not-too-distant) future.
To get a sense of the changes resulting from ongoing rapid advances in digital technology, check out the video on "Socialnomics" below. You can also view it on the SMinOrgs YouTube Channel, which has other social media video resources as well.
Proper management of the rise in digital social media is critical to ensure that organizations respond effectively to the challenges and opportunities these changes present. Practitioners in all functional areas will need to provide necessary leadership and support for various organizational initiatives, in addition to preparing themselves for how social media will impact their own career development.
